Russell Brand Mocked for ‘Melatonin’ Post on Kamala Harris

Actor Russell Brand was mocked on social media this week for a social media post where he accidentally used the word “melatonin” while speaking about Vice President Kamala Harris.

On Monday, Brand shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, where he spoke about President Joe Biden‘s decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race, and endorse Harris as the Democratic candidate.

“If Kamala Harris is to be the new pick in the ‘bait n’ switch’, ‘find the lady’ cup n’ ball trick that we are being offered in lieu of democracy, we already know she’s a socially inept and empty instrument of intransigent, institutional power, solely offering cutaneous and genetic novelty to a famished pack of secularist devotees so bewildered that melatonin and an ‘X chromosome’ could represent to them some kind of pyrrhic victory,” Brand wrote in a portion of his lengthy post.

“If it’s Gavin (gruesome, nuisance) Newsome [sic], he’s anotherslick post-Clinton-smarm-merchant. If it’s Michelle Obama, or Hilary [sic] Clinton – we’ve already seen those movies, and while gender-swap-reboots may yet be in vogue at Marvel-Disney, there are significant signs that the DPU’ (Democratic Party Universe) audience are wearying of this superannuated device,” he added.

Brand’s post prompted many social media users to respond, as he appeared to mixup the words “melatonin” and “melanin,” a substance in the body that creates darker skin.

X user @shockproofbeats responded to Brand’s post saying “Lot of ‘thick person’s idea of a smart person’ here. He means melanin not melatonin men have X chromosones too, and a pyyrhic victory is not ever something you aim for, it’s an unintended effect. Like pivoting from sex pest to political guru, perhaps.”

X user @Modhabobo said, “Lets talk about eloquence, and how people think it’s using big words, when actually it’s about clarity of expression. Russell Brand uses lots of words (incorrectly, like pyrrhic) to create a word salad, while Rob uses language to eloquently state his exact point in 7 words.”

X user Dean Blundell shared a screenshot of Brand’s post and said, “Alright, who game[sic] Russell Brand a prank thesaurus?”

X user Funk Butcher responded to Brand’s post with a photo showing a bottle of melatonin, and said, “This guy was always an idiot…This is what Russell Brand thinks all of us Black people have to give us darker skin tones hahhahaahah.”

Reporter Claudia Cockerell wrote “not Russell Brand confusing melanin with melatonin in his attempted takedown of Kamala Harris.”
