San Angelo, did you feel that 4.9 magnitude earthquake Monday night?

West Texas was rattled by a series of earthquakes, including a 4.9 magnitude event in Scurry County.

According to the United States Geological Survey, Scurry County was hit by a reported 4.9-magnitude earthquake, tying as the eighth-strongest earthquake in Texas history.

“There was an earthquake which we felt slightly at our weather office, and which was felt by others in the Concho Valley and Big Country,” the San Angelo National Weather Service Office stated on Facebook.

According to information on the USGS website, the earthquake occurred at 10:38 p.m. on July 22. The location was approximately 10.6 miles northeast of Hermleigh, Texas.

“The earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.7 kilometers (approximately 4.8 miles),” NWS stated.

There were no initial reports of injury or damage.

Staying safe during an earthquake

Ready.gov gives tips on staying safe when an earthquake happens:

• If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.

• If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow.

• If you are outdoors, stay outdoors away from buildings.

• If you are inside, stay, do not run outside and do avoid doorways.

• Drop, cover and hold on. Wherever you are, drop down to your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy. Cover your head and neck with your arms. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If you are under a table or desk, hold on with one hand and be ready to move with it if it moves.
